1.7 kW INSTALLATION
In December 2014, A1 Highways was subcontracted to install a 1.7 kW solar farm located a Weipa, North Queensland as part of the Wepia 6.7kw solar farm for Rio Tinto Alcan and incorporated federal funding. The scope of works included installation of posts, rock drilling, trenching and cable pulling through the conduits in preparation for the electrician and general earthworks, including minor concrete works and footings.
The project will be the first off the grid solar farm, for remote mining where electricity access is limited. The solar farm will also provide support to the existing diesel generator currently in operation at the Rio Tinto Mine.
The project includes the construction and operation of a 6.7MW Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Farm in two stages at Rio Tinto Alcan’s (RTA) remote bauxite operation in Weipa.
The solar farm will generate 2620 megawatt hours of electricity each year on the mine.
